The church was not flourishing in those days. A year or two before, dissension had split the congregation, and half the worshipers had gone off with the minister to form a new church.
By the beginning of the 20th century, however, the building was owned by the trustees of the Carrs Lane Congregational church in Birmingham and was being used as an institute. (fn. ) In it was reopened as a Congregational church by the efforts of a Miss Powell, who had recently come to live in the district.
While at Carr's Lane Jowett was elected chairman of the Congregational Union and president of the National Council of Evangelical Free Churches.
Jowett served at the Presbyterian Church, Fifth Avenue, New York, from tothen Westminster Chapel from towhen he retired due to ill-health, and died the following year.
